Cross country teams overcome Jamboree

STILLWATER, Okla. (Oct. 3, 2009) – The Oklahoma Christian cross country teams had a good showing at the OSU Jamboree meet on Saturday morning. The men placed 15th in the university division, along with a team that finished 18th in the college division. The Lady Eagles placed seventh overall in the college division.

The Lady Eagles got the meet off to a good start with a seventh place finish out of the 26 teams that were present in the college division. Nicole Lair led the women with a 14th place finish out of the 199-runner field, in a time of 19:31.

Not too fair behind Lair was a close pack of OC women. Irene Masai placed 53rd clocking a 20:30 with Kaili Tucker right after in 56th just three seconds later in 20:33. Rachel Snider (20:40) and Melyssa Cardenas (20:44) were soon to follow with 61st and 63rd finishes, respectively.

Lena Bakin rounded out the Lady Eagles’ top five runners with an 86th place finish in 21:17. To finish out the top seven runners for OC, Cady Block finished 127th with a 22:18 and Kaci Shough finished 176th in 24:33.

The men raced two teams at the OSU Jamboree. Running directly after the women’s college division race was the men’s college division with 239 participants. Head coach Mark Thompson was present in the race coming away with a second place finish in 25:16.

To lead the Eagles’ team in the college division race was Andy Schmidt who came in 73rd place with a 27:20. Angel Sanchez followed up with a 104th place finish in 27:49. Not far behind was Nick Stoots who finished 111th with a 27:57 effort.

Finishing out the top five for the Eagles were Evan Fike (28:22) in 127th and Jacob Wolf (28:44) in 143rd. Michael Hinds finished right on Wolf’s heels in 28:45 to finish in 144th. Drew Harwell rounded out the Eagles’ top seven runners with a 29:02 finish to place 156th.

The Eagles took away an 18th place team finish out of the 28 teams that participated in the college division race.

Oklahoma Christian also entered a six-man team into the university division, which was loaded with NCAA division I and II talent. Silas Kisorio paced the Eagles with a seventh place finish out of the 245 runner field. Kisorio came across the line in a time of 24:09.

Next for the OC men was Geoffrey Njonjo who placed 81st with a time of 25:47. David McWilliams, who claimed 122nd place after clocking a 26:28, followed Njonjo. Britt Barrientez was the fourth man for the Eagles after putting forth a 27:33 effort to collect a 189th place finish.

Coming in fifth and sixth for the Eagles were Joseph Zarazua (27:45) and Brayden Barrientez (27:52) who finished 203rd and 208th, respectively. Assistant coach, Sam Dech, also competed running a 25:38 to finish 73rd.

The six-man team finished 15th in the university division out of the 25 teams in the race.

The cross country teams prepare to race again at the upcoming OBU Bison Invitational on Oct. 10 in Shawnee, Okla.

Oklahoma Christian inducted its five newest Athletic Hall of Fame members on Friday, including a first for the university – a current student.

Men’s basketball star Charlie Smith, tennis coach Kris Miller, track standout Kathy (Nelson) Belcoff, softball ace Leah Carrell and current track and cross country All-American Silas Kisorio participated in the formal induction ceremony, held in OC’s Gaylord University Center.

Don Meyer, the NCAA leader in career men’s basketball coaching wins with 923, was the keynote speaker. The former coach at OC’s sister institution, Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., praised the five inductees for developing their athletic gifts and encouraged the 250 people in attendance to do the same with the gifts they’d been blessed with by God.
