Records fall, athletes qualify for national meet

(Feb. 6, 2010) – Silas Kisorio highlighted an eventful day for the track and field teams with two first place finishes and a new school record in the 800-meter run at the Cyclone Open.

In Ames, Iowa, several of OC’s distance runners competed in the Cyclone Open at Iowa State University. The 800-meter indoor school record fell on both the women’s and men’s sides of competition.

Kisorio ran a 1:50.64 on the 300-meter oversized track to surpass Josh Wayland’s previous record of 1:52.25 set in 2009. Kisorio did so after first racing in the mile and placing first with a 4:04.37. Assistant track coach, Mark Thompson, placed second in the event behind Kisorio with a 4:09.30.

Frezer Legesse also competed in the men’s mile run and clocked a 4:19.27 personal best, a time which qualifies provisionally for indoor nationals.

Irene Masai placed fifth in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.09. The time is good enough for provisional qualifying as well as to eclipse Rachel Snider’s previous school record of 2:19.55.

In the men’s 3000-meter event, Geoffrey Njonjo ran the distance in 8:45.69 to place sixth and qualify provisionally for the national meet.

In Norman, Okla. the rest of the track and field teams competed at the second indoor meet hosted by Oklahoma Christian.

Several athletes brought home top three finishes including Denise Mattoon who placed first in the weight throw and second in the shot put. Mattoon launched the weight throw 53 feet, seven inches and had a shot put of 41 feet, seven and three quarter inches. Both throws were good enough for automatic qualification.

Evan Fike placed second in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:59.08 while Renaldo Garrett placed second in the 60 hurdles with a 8.46 second performance. Garrett’s time was good enough for provisional qualification.

In the women’s high jump, Michelle Marcha leaped over 5 feet, one and three quarter inches to place third in the event.

The OC track and field teams will return to Norman next weekend on Feb. 13 to compete in the third of Oklahoma Christian’s hosted indoor meets.

Hall of Fame Recap Video

Oklahoma Christian inducted its five newest Athletic Hall of Fame members on Friday, including a first for the university – a current student.

Men’s basketball star Charlie Smith, tennis coach Kris Miller, track standout Kathy (Nelson) Belcoff, softball ace Leah Carrell and current track and cross country All-American Silas Kisorio participated in the formal induction ceremony, held in OC’s Gaylord University Center.

Don Meyer, the NCAA leader in career men’s basketball coaching wins with 923, was the keynote speaker. The former coach at OC’s sister institution, Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., praised the five inductees for developing their athletic gifts and encouraged the 250 people in attendance to do the same with the gifts they’d been blessed with by God.
