Soccer teams earn victories with two shutouts

OC-Wayland highlights

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 3, 2009) - The Oklahoma Christian women’s and men’s teams both earned victories on Saturday afternoon at the OC soccer field. The women shutout Wayland Baptist University 1-0 and the men followed suit with an 8-0 shutout over Wayland.

The women’s game against Wayland got off to a good start for the Lady Eagles. Not long into the half, Heather Spencer found the back of the net after an assist by Taylor Cofer. During the remainder of the half, the Lady Eagles continued to assault Wayland’s goal but were unable to score.

Throughout the second half, the Oklahoma Christian women fought hard against the Pioneer women. The Lady Eagles made numerous shots, yet none found the back of the net. In spite of such, the Lady Eagles’ defense held firm keeping the Pioneer women from scoring and held them to a 1-0 shutout.

The win for the Oklahoma Christian women is their seventh making them 7-2-1 on the season.

The Eagles laid on a collection of shots right off the bat to start the men’s game on the right foot. Shortly into the half, Cristian Fernandes put the ball into the net off an assist from Craig Turbyfill to put OC up 1-0. Later in the half, Trey Boykin scored a goal after Neil Hilton’s assist. Within the next ten minutes, Boykin came away with two more goals after being assisted again by Hilton and then later by Tommy Guernsey.

Not long before the completion of the first half, OC’s Peter Gordon found the net to put the Eagles up 5-0 at the half.

At the start of the second half, Gordon again found the goal to up the Eagles’ lead to 6-0. Not long after, Boykin scored his fourth goal of the game to put another point on the board. With less than five minutes left in the game, Pablo Hernandez put the ball past Wayland’s keeper to give the Eagles a final score of 8-0.

The shutout advances the Eagles to 5-2-1 for the season.

The Eagles return to action on the road to play Tabor (Kan.) on Monday at 3:00 p.m in Hillsboro, Kan. The Lady Eagles will continue conference play on Tuesday against Northwestern Oklahoma State at 7:00 p.m in Alva, Okla.
