PAYNE ATHLETIC CENTER / EAGLES’ NEST
The Payne Athletic Center houses all of OC’s athletic offices and the Department of Physical Education. The facility, which opened in 1970, is named for W.T. Payne. The Payne Center’s centerpiece is the Eagles’ Nest, home to OC’s basketball teams and to intramural events. The facility also features a fitness center and a 25-meter pool. Recent renovations upgraded the locker rooms and added a training room and a hospitality area. The Oklahoman newspaper recently named the Eagles’ Nest as one of the top 100 athletic venues in Oklahoma history, saying it boasts “the best small-college atmosphere in the state.”
RAY VAUGHN TRACK
Once described in Sports Illustrated as the “windiest track in America,” the track facility is named for the athletic department’s late patriarch, Ray Vaughn, Sr. Vaughn served Oklahoma Christian for 40 years as a coach and athletic director. Vaughn Track has spawned 22 NAIA national championships in individual events or relays and has been home to some of the university’s greatest athletes, including U.S. Olympian Jeff Bennett.
MAX & RAMONA DOBSON FIELD
OC’s new baseball facility is named after legendary Eagle baseball coach Max Dobson and his late wife Ramona. It will be a first-class facility with lights and other amenities that will make it an attractive venue for night games and for state, regional and national tournaments. The stadium will be completed in two phases, with the first phase scheduled to be complete in advance of the 2007-08 season. OC SOFTBALL FIELD
In addition to serving as home to the Lady Eagle softball team, OC’s softball facility has been a preferred practice site for several NCAA Division I teams playing in the College World Series in Oklahoma City. A new softball stadium is planned that will make Oklahoma Christian a major player in hosting local, state and national softball events year-round.
OC SOCCER FIELD
This facility provides an on-campus home for the OC soccer programs and hosts numerous events during the year.
OC TENNIS COURTS
The men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and host selected matches at the on-campus tennis courts, adjacent to the Payne Athletic Center.
THE ‘BARN’
The former home gym for OC basketball, the Barn now houses the university’s Physical Education for the Exceptional Child, Recreation for the Handicapped Child, and Teaching the Disabled Child courses, which serve children from the surrounding community. The facility also serves as an auxiliary gym during OC’s famous Cage Camps.
