DAMON SIMS
Six-time NAIA All-American, 1994 national champion (200-meter dash):
I had the opportunity to run track at an NCAA Division I school, but Oklahoma Christian was the right fit for me. OC gave me the chance to compete at a high level, but in an environment that focused on me as a student and as a person instead of just as an athlete.
I was blessed to win a national championship, and I'll carry that with me forever. But the qualities of integrity, responsibility and respect for others that my coaches and teachers helped develop mean a lot more to me in my life and career.
That's why Oklahoma Christian and its athletic programs are so important. They help prepare you for life. And the more young people who have the chance to benefit from that, the better.
RACHEL MARTIN
2006-07 NAIA & Kodak/WBCA First-Team Basketball All-American
Transfer from the NCAA Division I level:
The athletic facilities and the academic support system were great at the Division I level. That made us feel appreciated and helped us feel we could reach our goals and aspirations. I'm excited about the plans to do that here at Oklahoma Christian. Having better facilities and an enhanced support system with our own strength and conditioning coach, weight room, study hall facilities and tutors would be great.
Of course, a Christian atmosphere is something I didn't have there that is definitely a plus at OC. People genuinely care about you here and about what you want to do. Combining that with OC's plans for better facilities and academic support can make a big difference. The academic support especially would be a good addition. It would help athletes feel they can take on a big load just like a regular student and that someone is there to advise them.
